The theme during Children’s Mental Health Week is ‘Express Yourself’ and their patron, HRH The Duchess of Cambridge, stressed the need for parents and carers to look after their own mental wellbeing and how this affects the children in their care.
Research marks the decline in children’s mental health from 1 in 9 to 1 in 6 and statistics suggest that 50% of lifetime mental illness starts by the age of 14.
It is difficult to imagine a more difficult situation for parents and their children than being trapped at home in lockdown with an abusive partner and parent.
Psychological control, and the fear felt by parents and children, disables free expression and leads to feelings of imprisonment, powerlessness and lack of self-esteem.
Parents in such situations can take back control and protect their children from witnessing or experiencing domestic abuse by excluding their partner from the home.
Abusive behaviour is a crime and there does not need to be violence for the Police to help. The Family Courts will also protect parents and children by making orders which prevents coercive, psychological and physical abuse from continuing, whilst child arrangements are being decided.
